Yes indeed. I think that is the issue. I need a darker sand. Did you see the pics with the congicus??? Do you know what type of substrate that is????
 
If you want your bichirs to stand out in color, try the black quartz sand or the reddish sand (forgot the name). The bichir's colors will change depending on the substrate color. For the black sand, the bichir's body will become darker while for the reddish sands, it creates a great contrast with the bichirs.

I have found this to be true. My bichir bro did this in hi 125 gal with red floraite and hi poly colored right up. over night it seemed. However it took like 8-10 bags of floraite. SMH I would like to find something in a larger size bag 40-50lbs.
 
Check substrate source on eBay. They have a sand called brick red that looks like what you want. I mixed mine with black and grey. Check out my thread in the media lounge to make sure.
