Kinda big difference between the palmas species by looking on pattern. This guy is 100% polli looking at pattern, head shape and finlet count.

It is 100% Polypterus Palmas Polli. you can tell because it has 4-6 dorsal fins in the back, the head shape, and the pattern.

Palmas polli: 5-7 dorsal spines
Palmas buettikoferi: 7-10 dorsal spines
Palmas palmas: 7-9 dorsal spines
retropinnis: 7-9 dorsal spines

So it can be tough. Personally, mine (which I believe to be retropinnis) has 7 spines, making it super difficult to discern. But visit the site I linked and compare the characteristics with your own fish. I can't quite tell from your pic if there are 6 or 7 spines, but I think it's 7. Remember that dorsal spines aren't the same as dorsal finlets. Usually the "tail" has one spine at the leading edge.

But here's a quote about P. retropinnis that I think both you and M4ttSyke should think about: "Reticulated pattern on dorsal side with olive-colored spots (Ref. 41580); also lower jaw with black spots, which separates it from Polypterus palmas". Both of you have shown pictures that fit this description. But go on the site and see what other characteristics you have. Just type "polypterus" into the genus search and you're on your way.

This bichir got 5-6 finlets depending on how you count, so palmas polli. Palmas polli got yellowish dots, palmas palmas got dark stripes and buetti I dunno how to explain but kinda speckled. Retro, arent they almost just black? Not so sure about these because they are so rare and you dont accidentally get a retro.

lol the pic wasn't that clear. I was thinking either moke or polli. So polli it is!

I have every single upper jaw bichir except for teugelsi. That's why it was easy for me to ID that bichir.

this is my retropinnis. This fish perfectly depicts your info on P. retropinnis. as you can see, the different in headshape is the key that differentiates from retropinnis and palmas polli.
