So it can be tough. Personally, mine (which I believe to be retropinnis) has 7 spines, making it super difficult to discern. But visit the site I linked and compare the characteristics with your own fish. I can't quite tell from your pic if there are 6 or 7 spines, but I think it's 7. Remember that dorsal spines aren't the same as dorsal finlets. Usually the "tail" has one spine at the leading edge.
But here's a quote about P. retropinnis that I think both you and M4ttSyke should think about: "Reticulated pattern on dorsal side with olive-colored spots (Ref. 41580); also lower jaw with black spots, which separates it from Polypterus palmas". Both of you have shown pictures that fit this description. But go on the site and see what other characteristics you have. Just type "polypterus" into the genus search and you're on your way.
