thnx Cohazard, i havent fed them that in a day or two now and im not having that problem anymore.

No problem man, a healthy 50% water change will help along removing the smell.

When polys aren't adjusted to hikari mass or carn, just break up a pellet into four small pieces and feed that so that they get used to the smell, and it shouldn't pollute the tank (and the air) too much if they don't eat it.

It's because of that smell (and the over price) that I switched to using hikari cichlid gold sinking.

Though that stuff will stink up the water too if un eaten, it wont do so as fast.

It is for sure for sure the hikari.

Carnivore and massivore will make your tank smell like someone took a dump in it, if the fish aren't eating the pellets within seconds of it hitting the bottom of the tank.
Are you sure that wasn't you having diarhea? Switch to feeding shrimps. It's more expensive but they grow a lot faster and no more smell.

Pretty sure, unless I ate some whackdonalds that day. :grinno:

I got tired of cutting up shrimps for those picky eaters. some would only eat if the shrimp was cut up tiny haha

Your problem is that you kept buying new ones then sell too soon before they grow big enough to eat bigger chunks of shrimps. When the bichirs are bigger cutting shrimps is faster because I do not have to cut it into super tiny pieces. I do admit cutting shrimps is tedious work but it's well worth it when I see how fat my bichirs are in 6 months.

You cheat, you buy all the 12" you can find haha

most of mine were raised from 6"

I didn't cheat but I did kept my newly purchased bichirs longer than you. The only bichirs I bought at 12" were the palmas palmas and delhezis. The rest were raised from 3" and feeding was a pain as well. Now they're pretty all 10+ so feeding is a lot easier.

For the guy with smelly water, you can add carbon into your filters to take out the smell temporarily.

Like Cohazard said, it is the Hikari for sure. If they don't eat it within 15-30 minutes, you need to siphon them out.

i used to feed chopped whiting and beef heart... but then i discovered how easy the pellets are to use and got lazy. im just gona go back to a routine of de-thawing and dicing meats for them. i have enough beef heart frozen in the basement freezer to last me forever. yesterday they got fed chopped red wiggler earthworm.... i hate chopping up live worms.

the tank has been torn down, moved outside, and is waiting to be cleaned. they cant all go back in there right now anyway, the delhezi is in quarantine. it jumped out of its tank the other day and i found it bloody and seemingly almost dead. QT seems to have helped. its getting healthy again. it ate yesterday so that's good.
