Depends on the dimensions. I THINK (havent kept them) 12x7x3.5 would be fine, but im no expert. Also, square edges and this species dont mix.

I agree, wider is always better for what is basically a pelagic fish.

IMO, you need MUCH bigger than 1k for this fish. The reason I say this is because of their eating and swimming habits...basically a pelagic fish. Also, the can damage their bills on glass. Think about what you would need for an arapaima and multiply times 5.

If he plans to keep this long term then a pond is whatis really needed unless he manages to seriously stunt it's growth but even then a really huge tank is going to be needed. I can see one being kept for several years in wide long 1000, the foot print of e tank is important.

i only plan on keeping him for a couple of years. i eventually wanna get every monster fish

How are you going to get rid of it? Not many people can keep a 5' paddlefish and its irresponsible to get it if you can't keep it in a large tank/pond. Or you could eat it. Hmm now that I think about it, in a couple of years, I might be in the market for one. But I might win the lotto.

How fast do Paddle fish really grow I figured them for slow growers and could fit in that 1000 gal with right dimensions for 10+ years.

i heard that if you have a fish tank or a pond and you use chemicals like stress coat and you eat the fish it will be bad maybe even kill you. is this true?
