I feed all my bichirs shrimp, tilapia and massivore. They will eat just about anything that sinks.

Hi! I feed my Polypterids Hikari Massivore sinking pellets and they love it. They also get treats during the week consisting of cut up Tilapia and Shrimp (uncooked of course) from the grocery store. It is much cheaper to buy food for them at grocery store than pet store but I like to have to Hikari around as it requires much less preperation to feed and lasts a while.

They also get about 30-100 feeder guppies added in once a week as a treat. I do not recommend doing this unless you have a few quarantine tanks to put them in for a week or 3 to make sure they do not pass infection onto your fish when eaten. You can also feed them ghost shrimp, but it is not very economical. If feeding live food, it is good to feed the live food the kind of food you want your big fish to have. Not only do your big fish get the nutrition from the feeders, but also from the contents of the feeder fish/shrimp's stomach. This method is called gut-loading.

You can also feed them earthworms, just make sure the ones you feed them have never been in contact with pesticides(go dig them up from your yard).

When they were smaller, I fed them an assortment of frozen beef heart, blood worms, brine shrimp and mysis shrimp and dry algae wafers. They stopped eating the wafers as they got larger.

It can be tricky to get them onto new foods. Do not worry if they do not want to eat the new stuff for a few days. It is common to have to go 2-3 days without feeding them to build up their appetite to help encourage them onto new foods.

Hope this helps you out!

TL;DR: Tilapia and Shrimp from the grocery store are great for them cut up and cheaper than the silversides by far. Hikari Massivore is also great food for them and can be broken into smaller pieces for smaller fish.

Molly fish, mosquito fish, beef heart brine shrimp cubes they'll eat almost anything, and if you want to feed them something that was part of their natural diet then get some African Dwarf Frogs, they eat em in the wild.

Hikari sinking carnivore pellets are perfect for their size. Supplement with blood worms, beef heart, raw table shrimp and scraps of fish like tilapia.
