Well its a sad day. I lost my fire eel today, to my Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri. :(

I came home from work to see the eels tail sticking out of the Polypterus' mouth, I tried to free the poor eel, but unfortunatly I was too late. :(

This is the second time it had tried to eat another tank mate, it tried to eat a golden nugget plec about 12months back. but I managed to save the plec (But sadly he died from a bacterial infection)

Is it time to find a new home for the endlicheri? I dont know... I love the damn fish, but he is a damn pain in the ass, and yeah I know he is doing what comes natural.

The eel was a good 6" and Id had him since he was only a few inches long...

Im going to go and cry in a small dark room

Why dont you divide him from other tank mates? Let them grow a bit before introducing them all back together

They have been together for about 12months now and been fine. The other tank mates are deep bodies, except the dwarf snakehead which will have to be moved eventually. So they shouldnt be at risk. I cant divide the tank due to the size and swimming space required for the flagtail prochildus and other others.

how big is your endlicheri ? i wouldn't mind one to go with my lap they look awesome ! i lost my 15" fire eel on sat somehow sneaked out of cover glasses,i had him over 3 years and raised him from a wormlike 4",it sucks when you lose them like that at least yours was recycled so to speak but still bad

I'd say keep it, and learn the lesson about smaller tankmates. I've lost a few clown loaches and geo's to my big ornate, I'm keeping him very well fed until I can move him into the 160g.

I've found with bichirs, if it looks like there's even half a chance that they might be able to swallow something then it will probably be gone by the morning!!

I am willing to haggle on the price, if you want pm me and we can talk money rather than clottering up this thread. :)

Sorry for your loss. =(
To any other fellow bichir owners I was wondering something and this topic brought it back up. I am thinking about getting an Endli and I was wondering, I currently have an 8" Ropefish in my tank and I was wondering if it would be safe to put say a 4"-6" Endli in the tank and let it grow with the rest of my bichirs. My question is eventually would the Endli eat the Ropefish or would it be ok?

Id say it would eat it, as rope fish grow long, but not wide.

AS for everyone saying: "buy bigger fish" its not like I had just added the fish the other day and it got eaten. They have been together for 12months and nothing wrong. I did miss their feed last night as I was busy so it could have b een that. As I only feed that tank once every two days.
