Polypterus in an open top tank - water level?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think euro-style around the edge of the tank would help reduce the chances of them jumping. I've watched my smaller dels and ornates in a tank with a low water level and they all do that thing where they swim up against the glass and sorta jump out a bit (usually hitting the lid or just dropping back in.

One of the main components of setting up a polypterus tank is to escape-proof it.

Read that as, making sure there are not gaping holes around the top lol

I like the idea andri, but even before reading Anne's post, I was going to say 18" is a fair estimate as to how high they can leap out of the water when feeling threatened.

Then again, you could design a setup 48" tall with only 24" of water. Add a glass door for easy access. Use branches out of the water, would make a nice looking setup, for bichirs, or even for archer fish :)

I have a lid on my 200G, i just like the look of open top tanks and want to keep this one open.
Most of my Polypterus are in this tank:

Andri, your 200g is amazing. I've been meaning to PM you since I saw it in the photo thread, could you PM me with what substrate and plants you used for it? My 180g from tenecor is arriving in 3-4 weeks and I really want to set mine up similar to yours.
