As long as you rinse it out really well, it should be fine. I've used playground sand, pool filter sand, beach sand and garnet sand. Haven't had a problem with any if them

I use Home Depot sand and my bichirs love it. Youll be happy to see your Bichirs hiding under the sand. Good Luck
