Polypterus Sp. Cotto?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hopefully new locales/species like these will create some excitement in the bicher game. So hard to get wild caught fish with such a small market for them :(
I know. It hurts to see such a cool fish and not be able to have it

These polys listed on the jp site is so detailed. So life like and high resolution. Just putting it out there. Not to be a skeptic, but do u guys/gals think that the colors are manipulated a bit? Red tones??? After all, they look fantastic! We all want them now right? Just to note -They are on a black bottom, damaged mouths on some. That's always due to long transport or enclosed in small area. So where's there bland stress colors. Just curious that's all.

The colors do look very very vivid. Infact all of them did not only the cottos. Could be on to something.

I wouldn't think manipulated as much as the pictures bring out the most attractive colors. As a buyer, the more enticing the product, the more you want it.

Dr. B - Think I accidently got a sp. cotto from aquatic daycare, lol. I put it by first pic u posted in page 1. They look similar. :)

One thing I did notice is the pic from Japan is on a black substrate and urs isnt Vancouver. See what the good doc has to say.

This biggest poly of mine is my shyest. Absolutely will not come up to the front. Tends to move around only when lights are are off. I've been tinkering around with driftwood pieces in the middle of tank and placing my Anubia plants on the back with suction cups.plus, I have just changed substrate color from red to this pottery medley since Sunday night. Not sure how this Poly is going to turn out with the new changes.

Nice looking Dabola, but I don't quite think it's a cotto. The problem with the cotto is lack of information, I honestly thought we would've heard more about them and the locality by now, but they are still labeled as a Koliba hybrid. Another thing to think about is how similar they look. While there are somewhat noticeable differences they have the same lap/endli mix of patterns, bringing into question of maybe they're the same species which is why I would've thought there'd be more info out there. Also from what I know it's a lot harder to import from Japan than it is from Africa, because in Japan they are already at retail price so importing them would make them cost more than double what they go for in Japan (which is a fair amount).
