I just went to turn out the lights on the tanks and my Koliba was dying. He had bloody red tissue coming from his gills. All I could do was watch helplessly as he suffered to death. What could have cause this?:cry::(:(

Sorry to hear this man! :(

Did you check it for worms on the skin?

Mine mysteriously died as well about a month or two ago. He was in the QT tank by himself. I didn't see any bloddy red tissue, but he only survived a week after I got him from Toyin.

No meds in the QT, just WC every 2-3 days.

The Endli that I got at the same time is doing fine.

who's in the tank with it?

He's in the big tank with some cichlids and the other large bichirs. None of the cichlids ever even blink at the bichirs. They're totally ignored.

My endli I got at the same time is doing good too.

The Koliba had a couple what looked like blood clots that came out of his gills while he was dying.....I have no idea what it was from or why?

He was my favorite poly of the group too. I don't think I'll get another one though after hearing yours died suddenly too.

Did you get any photos?

No unfortunately not. I was too busy freaking out to take pics. The best I can do is try to describe what it looked like.

The "bloodclots" things looked flat, about 1/2" x 1/2" around and very dark dark blood red. I thought they were pieces of the inside of his gills deteriorating out.

When we get new Polypterus
we always give at least 1 dose of Clout... in case of parasites.

The other problem with Polypterus is
they are extremely hyper active at night,
the most likely thing that happened in your case was he injured himself.
Maybe keep a night light on.

You know what? I've been covering the tank with a small children's blanket for the last couple of weeks (since I got the new polys) at night because the fish room is never completely dark. I wanted to give them the sensation of "real nightime". I guess I'll not do that anymore. Man, why didn't I ask you guys before doing that? :screwy:

Clout is the name of the product? I'll look it up. Thanks for the advice.

The blood streaks or red hemoraging is usually from water quality.. (ammonia, nitrite)

Could also do with osmosis.. pre-existing hardness vs. newly acclimated hardness?
