I keep ca cichlids w/ mine pretty successfully.
Jack dempsey, Texas, & Red head ( all male ) in the 125gal. w/ 2 sen, & 1 del.
Red head, & Convict ( females ) in the 55gal. w/ 2 albino sen.

These cichlids pay little mind to the polys.
The only aggressive behavior I've seen out of the cichlids toward the polys, is an open mouth push, & it's seldom.

i got my first 240 gallon fish tank, i have 5 inch silver aro, 3-4 inch lapradei, 2-3 inch senegal, and 6-7 inch retro. i plan on getting a fire eel later on and maybe a gar. my 240 gallon will still be pretty empty so i wanna get some more fish. what kind of fish could i get that wont eat my bichirs? how about raphael catfish?
any schools of fish that i could get?

I've had success with:
Congo tetras (so far only one of 6 has been eaten. the polys are growing though. Expensive. Schools.)
African butterfly fish (its basically a floating raft fish. it won't dive unless you really scare it from above. jumper.)
African knife fish (Xenomystus nigri)

I got 2 senegals with a FL gar..
any other fish i can add in?
