Hey guys. I was wondering if you would share your experiences with the activity levels of various lower jaw Polypterus species. Obviously there is variance on an individual level, and other factors (feeding, lighting) stimulate (or don't) high levels of activity. Just looking for more info.

Every cb specimin I have owned is constantly on patrol, lower and upper jaws. Does anyone see this in WC lower jaws? My experience with WC lower jaws has been that they do their best to stay hidden at all times. I have heard that dabola and pbb are often 'swimmers.'

Thanks.

I have a wild caught poly palmas polli and that guy is always hiding. He hunts his food (tilapia, pellets, etc). I have a wild caught del that is always moving around and is laid out in the bare areas of tank. He's just hunting randomly. Just my experience.

For lower jaws I have a couple of doubles in my tank and each one acts differently. I know that most of my LJ usually just chill in the back of the tank with everyone else (creating a MASSIVE poly pile about the length of the tank). And then I have some that are usually always out and about. There is one in particular that amazes me and it's my 17"-18" WC Female Koliba. She is always at the front or sides of the tank. Very rarely do I see her in the back with everyone else. Her male counterpart however likes to stay towards the back, but does occasionally come and join her at the front. I also have some faranah laps that are very different. One I never really see (mainly she's hiding under or behind all the other larger polys) and the other I see quite a bit. I would say they aren't active as in pacing the tank as if some of my UJ do, but more like they are just out and not trying to hide away behind driftwood or other polys. Another one of my favorites is my BV. He's a wildcard. Somedays he's out and about all around the front of the tank and other days he's just chilling in the back. A lot of my polys really rotate as to who is in the front and who is in the back. Theres only a select few that I rarely see in the front. And a select few that are usually always in the front.

Those will be posted soon enough haha They will deserve a thread of their own once I finish sinking my driftwood. I have to make the tank look presentable first haha it's pretty bare right now well other than some monster bichirs lol.

Every endli I've ever kept, wc or cb, have always been fairly active, constantly on the move and pacing the tank. Not as crazy as my uj's but almost. I also have a lap that's fairly active and 1 that never seems to move except during feeding. And my congi's and ansorgii like to just chill in 1 spot majority of the time.

I have about 25 ft of lower jaws that all are logs until feeding time. I can skip feeding for several days and they still are immobile. They range from 18-24". All species except Congicus. I even have Dabola. Logs!

I have two that are in my 210g community. A 12" WC Weeksii and a 9" CB Delhezi. When younger the del was the more active visible one but as time goes on the weeksii is out a lot and just will swim the tank with the other larger cichlids.

I've had active Congicus, Endli, Laps, PBB, Ansorgii. I've noticed the more active they were the more they would eat which made them grow faster. At least for the Congicus. I had a group of Congicus, the ones that were active grew faster than the ones who were inactive. One of the Congicus reached 25" and other reached 23"-24", while most of them were 16"-18".
