Poly's with High activity Levels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My 12" lap is always out and about. He will come to the front when he sees me sometimes. But my teugelsi is always hiding. The only times I see him out is when he is changing hiding spots.

I noticed a lot more movement in general when I added my two flowida gars to the tank. Was really curious about your experiences. Thanks guys :p

Hey guys. I was wondering if you would share your experiences with the activity levels of various lower jaw Polypterus species. Obviously there is variance on an individual level, and other factors (feeding, lighting) stimulate (or don't) high levels of activity. Just looking for more info.

Every cb specimin I have owned is constantly on patrol, lower and upper jaws. Does anyone see this in WC lower jaws? My experience with WC lower jaws has been that they do their best to stay hidden at all times. I have heard that dabola and pbb are often 'swimmers.'

Thanks.

I have:
3x senegalus ( 2 albinos )
3x Palmas (1 adult )
2x ropefish

They are all really active they swim all around the tank :)

I have 7 teugs, 1 del, and 1 weeksii, the del used to be the most active but not anymore, i always see my teugs out though, but they mostly hide, the weeksii is only out to breath air.

I lost my favorites that were more active but what can you do :/

You may be on to something with the CB being more active. I've noticed the most activity out of my CB tueg, del, ornate and Senegal. Whereas my WC weeksi, mokele, and Senegal were extremely skittish. But most lower-jaws captive or wild have been reclusive in my opinion but not skittish. Can't comment on palmas or retro but hopefully one day I can : D

I think it's more on species and sometimes individuals. I have WC palmas polli and they are constantly moving. I also have WC and CB senegals and both are always moving. My big female WC sen is a big time swimmer to. She'll be in one spot then you'll turn your head and she'll be in another on the other side of the tank.

The new admit congicus I picked up is highly active. More active than my sen, even. The only time he stops swimming is when he is digesting or after a big waterchange. He was begging me for talapia when I walked in the door tonight :D

My retro and buets are very reclusive, rarely ever adventuring into the light. My weeksii is wild caught and also very reclusive.
