pond algae

Please do not put chemicals into the water if your fish are healthy. U do not know wad they put inside... Use a UV filter to get rid of green water in your pond.

I don't know how to clear algae blooms that have all ready occured except by physically removing the algae. If your pond is small enough than once you get it under control you might want to add shade plants like pond lilies to the pond, and potted trees placed to shade the pond around it, or even suspend some shade mesh over it to help prevent it from happening again. these measures will also help with what is already in there but remember that any algae that dies in there will rot and add to your bioload unless it is removed.

Our 5 acre pond has always had a thick green look to it, but up close the water is relatively clear (you can see bream beds in 2-3 ft. of water). My mother, against my strong advice, introduced water lettuce - "its just 2 or 3 plants, it will be ok..." she says...

Well, before teh water lettuce covered the entire pond, it did a good job of clearing things up. In the early spring, before the stuff got growing good, the pond looked fantastic.

So... try adding some water lettuce, assuming your pond is small enough for you to physically remove each and every bit of excess lettuce and burn it.

Note... a section of chickenwire fencing dragged between 2 small boats with electric motors makes a good "rake" for the surface of a pond.

Water lilies and long leaf pond weed are very nice in a small pond and won't take it over like w. hyacynth and w. lettuce can. Theystay where you put them, compete for nutrients with the algae, provide cover and shade for fish, and produce nice blossoms, japanese lotus is also good and you can eat the immature seed pods.
