Pond Armor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hey butch

bump

i am thinking of making a indoor pond enclosure for my turtles. here's what i'm thinking. a structure of 2x4's with water resistant exterior grade gyp bd as sheathing. my question is on the interior, i want to make a lagoon type ramp out of rigid styrofoam insulation sheets (essentially using mutiple sheets to form steps). will pond armor adhere to it? would you recommend

1) parging the ramp with something like concrete

2) running sheets of fiberglass tape or mesh over the stepped area

ps. is there a recommeded sealant for the corner edges that are not 90 degrees? for example, if i use a sheet of sheathing for the ramp instead of steps, the area of concern is where the ramp mets the floor. there is going to be a empty wedge.

thanks

Hi b-man,
Sounds like a fun project. What I would do is create the ramp mechanism out of foam as you describe but slightly smaller than what it needs to be. You can then glue concrete board to it and use fiberglass tape on all of the seams. Even those that traverse the wood.

This way, you have a nice structured material over the foam that will be less likely to give if something is dropped on it. Thoug, I would not recommend any real weight being put on the ramp other than your turtles as the foam would give and the concrete board would colapse. By the way, if you do not know what concrete board is, go to a local hardware store and ask. It is the same board they use for walls in bathrooms were moisture would otherwise riun regular drywall board.

On that seam where there might be an empty wedge or a drop off, you could thicken Pond Shield with coloidal silica or any other thickening agent like those you might find over at fibreglast.com Then use a putty knife to form that into a gentle slope from your board to the floor. Rememeber, it's a good idea to fiberglass that area as well.
Thanks,

It sure is. Just Google search it. They have a cool website with tons of pics.

It's worth searching some DIY threads with this stuff. Some people have had poor luck sealing plywood tanks with it for a variety of reasons. I believe they are still in business, but I would not use this product unless I had money to burn, lots of time to spend perfecting the application technique, and was applying directly to a concrete or similarly rigid tank.

My own experience with an epoxy product (granted my epoxy was NOT designed for sealing tanks) was that it cracked when the tank flexed.

Yes they are as we just finished a large project with it. In fact it was a spray application with the black. I'll have some pictures up on another thread. I'll also be posting MFK specials on pond armor next week ;)

Hi Butch,

I have been interested in building a large plywood and glass tank (12'x6'x4') using pond armor and wanted to know if the chemicals used in Marine grade ply are compatable with your sealant?
I like the idea of diluting with thinners for extra penetration for the first coat but wanted to know if their was a certain type of ply that you would recommend?

Cheers.
