Pond Build - Using Poly-totes???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its a little hard to tell from the pic. But the ponds are on a hill so it made it easy. One overflows into the next and so on. All the holes were overdug so i basically made my own small creek without a pond liner. It stays surprisingly clean and does its job of carrying water further away from my house. I started with one so i can always add another section at a time no prob. When the sump pump runs everything fills up and spills around each pond as well as at the bottom. I put in some flowers and marginal plants to fill in and suck up some of the ecess water. As for the rest of the run off i have a permenant 4-6' wide by 20' strip of the greenest grass in town lol...its always higher than the rest. Solved my prob. of a muddy patch in the lawn from waterchanges on 29 tanks. Excited to see what you do with these containers, i'd like to have some to play with :)

The IBC totes are very flexible. Long term they can be damaged by UV rays. They become very brittle in cold weather. If you do decide to bury them, you should put some kind of barrier between the soil and the container. IMO, you are better off getting some large rubbermaid stock tanks. I have two of them that I use for small ponds that have been buried in the ground. Been in the ground for 4 years with no problem. The rubbermaid is much more rigid. No barrier needed between soil and container. Not affected by UV rays. Can withstand freezing.

Well, I'm down about 3 feet deep now. The hole is a bit larger than 8' x 5'. I'm now leaning toward a big ole goldfish / koi pond... Thinking about bricking up the sides, sticking a pond liner in, and installing some bottom drains and a skimmer or 2.... LOL. Dang, and I was gonna do this one dirt cheap!

Nice to hear its ending up larger than expected :) did you have your yard checked/marked for gas or water lines? I was worried about hitting something when i was digging lol
