Hi I wanted to know if anybody has used a large pond canister for aquarium use before??
I have a brand new Laguna 8000 UVC in the shed and wondered if I hooked it up to an external pump if it might make a good aquarium filter.
It's rated for ponds of 8000 liters. It could be good for a 500g tank.
What do you guys think??

I'd knock the UV off it first and see how it works

It was bought for a future pond but I have a 500g tank coming and wanted to know if it could be used in an aquarium.
Some people think it won't work but haven't told me "WHY NOT" exactly.
They are a quality filter.

I'd like to thing along the lines of "a filter is a filter", I would even go as far as to say that it wouldn't not work. As far as the efficiency of a pond filter being used in an aquarium, you may see it lacking in energy efficiency department, and may even be louder than you would like if used indoors. Just my thoughts.

Your point about noise may be correct but I am not that worried as the tank is not inside the house. As for energy effeciency they (pond pumps) won't rate well against a 2080 or FX5 but they move more water. Check out these pumps (Max Flo 3500 and 6000) not bad effeciency for the water moved. http://creativepumps.com.au/zpumps/laguna/laguna_maxflo_pumps.htm

I think it may work very well but I am unsure as to where I should place to pump.

Ive seen them as part of system in LFS work quite well on as many as twenty 20- 90 gallon tanks. They make great prime movers for sump systems.
So have I mate.

"Hey"...... I checked out your photo link and that tank with the Cichla, CKF, Dats, Birch, Loaches and Gars is a dream.
How big is it and what filtration are you running??

I'd try it out. My experience w/ pressurized pond filters is that they are great at mechanical filtration, but lack in the bio department. Right now I'm using a Cyprio Bioforce 100 on my 350g pond. It's used mainly for mechanical as my bio occurs is a 55g drum.
