Pond Catfish???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have given up on the idea of a RTC as I think it would be cruel for me to keep one. I do think I am going to do your idea of a school of limas though. I was thinking 5. That would be awsome when they get big. Then I was thinking of maybe and aro and the ID shark. No matter what I am getting the ID shark because I want to save my cousins. They usually don't get over 2 ft in aquariums correct? Atleast that is what I read on here the other day. Thank you a ton for talking me out of it. It would have been cruel. How fast can I plan on these fish growing?

that will be cool to see a school of limas. They should be around a foot within the first year. I have had mine for 5 months and they are already 10 inches. I got them at 3 inches. So not super slow growers, but they slowed down at the size they are now. I've heard of a few members in here that had them to 18 inches after 2 years. I think 5-7 would be awesome in the size pond you are looking at. They school in the wild and hunt in packs so it should be quite a sight to see when they are bigger. Id sharks are said to grow much slower than other catfish. You are looking at a max size larger than 2ft in your pond though. I would say more like 3ft. eventually. Many people have said that they are hard to raise, and I to have had problems keeping them in the past. A local resturaunt around here has had a pair for around 5 years and they are over 2ft. Their tank is way too small though. I am trying to talk the owner into handing them over to me, or at least one of them. No clue on aro growth though. Never kept one. I think that it would probably be at least 4 years or more before your limas would be more than 2 ft. Post lots of pics!

Well then it is settled... well atleast the limas for sure. I know the limas and ID shark will go in. I don't really care how fast the ID grows because I am keeping him for my cousin. If he grows quickly then great if not well then he will be one of those fish that kinda gets forgot about. I think I will do that stuff then maybe another big fish or just wait for somebody else to get a fish that they were misinformed about haha. We all know how often that happens. I am sure that I will have it stocked nicely. Don't worry I LOVE to post pics of my boys so I am sure you will see plenty of them when I get it all done. And just to let you know this thing is going to have excellent filtration thanks to one of our members (275ti03) otherwise I wold never be able to afford that filtration. He is getting me 2 fluval 303s and a RENA XP3 for a very reasonable price. Thanks for all of your help and I am sure I will have other questions for you guys.

What is it about ID Sharks that makes them difficult to keep? I was actually thinking about keeping one or two in my future pond. Any tips on keeping them healthy?

My indoor pond cost me around $350 4x12 rubber liner and wood and pump/filter.
