In my backyard i have a 300gal pond with some koi and a couple other feedergoldfish. I just put the feeders in cuz id figure theyre cheap and theyd grow at a decent rate. We have alot of trouble with herrings in our area so i didnt wunna spend to much money on koi. Anyway the koi WERE about 10-11in.

About a month ago i got a couple large mouth bass and a sunny to put in there with them. Id go out every couple days and toss some more feeders in for the bass and a handful of pond food for the koi. The bass were about the same size as the koi but i never did see the koi. I figured they were just hiding under the lillies as usual. nothing big.

Last weekend i got a 22in channel cat. He loves the pond and hes constantly swimming all over the place. I came out today to feed the koi and bass and noticed one koi floating on his side torn to shred. His tail was a mess, almost no scales left, his color was gone and there were shred of skin just hanging on. I reached into grab him and he took off so i quickly grabbed a bucket and took him outfront and put him in my 150gal pond. I searched out the other koi and he looked the exact same. I caught him and put him outfront as well.

When i looked at the channel cat i noticed he was swimming around fine but that his tail was a little shredded. Im not sure wether the bass damaged the koi and the catfish. Wether the catfish damaged the koi and left the bass alone. Or wether the 20in common pleco in there decided to be a jerk and bully everyone else.

Im gunna keep an eye on the guys in the back pond but i think eveyrone wil be ok. I just hope that the koi will recover. Im lookin to put a new 500gal koi pond in outfront so if they recover they will live nicely in their.

Moral of the story, Dont trust any fish, your always taking a risk

sorry to hear that, I would imagine the bass were trying to get thier eat on.

haha yea thats what im thinking. Im just surprised cuz the bass were the same size as the koi

so the pond the bass were in has now been cleared of all bass and sunnies, i gave em to a guy whos gunna put em in his pond. the largest catfish and pleco i had, at about 24 and 18in jumped out of the pond because the bass were picking on them so bad. none of the koi survived. Good new is when i cleared out the back pond of the bass i found 2 channel cats and a bullhead cat all about10in the i thought had died shortly after i put them in the pond last year at about 1in.

sounds like the pond was a bit too small for the load of fish the poor koi had nowhere to run. if it were me, I'd be at the depot getting a 20'x25' tarp for 50$ and renting a bobcat with a digger extention for a day.

but then again you could just as easily go for less fish but where the fun in that?

haha might have been, but i think the problems solved. we had plans to put in a larger pond out front where we would put the koi and cafish so i figured theyd be in their for a day or so. well the parents backed out last minute and the fish were stuck in their for over 2 weeks
