Pond Filter....

Lava rocks will clog as well. Go with river gravel in varied sizes.

If you don't mind changing out some of the lava rock every year or so the added surface area is far more beneficial over gravel (I design my filters that use lava rock with enough space so that at the first year anniversary another bag of clean lava rock can just be thrown in the filter). If you only want to periodically clean go with the gravel (but do vary the size). You can even mix the two if you want.

A mesh bag w/lava rocks makes for an easy swap. Lava rock do provide a lot of surface area for BB. I use two nets in my skimmer and it makes for easy cleaning. Just pull one out and replace w/one that has dried a couple of days and is clean. The same could be said for lava rocks.

so after building filter from that one website i still need to buy a pressure or gravitational filter to add to it?

Either DIY or buy. You don't need to do both. If you are handy go DIY. If not - buy.
