Veteran - I don't get offended easily. There will always be a debate on gravel vs. non-gravel lined ponds. I myself am in the boat of gravel, but never exceeding 2-3". Over 3" and the pond is asking for problems from anerobic activity unless the substrate is stirred regularly. A shallow bed of gravel has many benefits, but thats for rainy day....

Did you go with a Bottom Drain?
