do some research on fish from the same lattitude all around the world and i am sure you can come up with more choices than just koi or goldfish there are plenty of halfway cool us native fish that you could put in there

40 degrees not too cold.

That is kind of cold for most tropical fish. You could try native fish or look for some cooler water species. But koi are probably your best bet cause they come in lots of colors plus they get big.

try some largemouth bass, just have a shady spot for the summer so they can get away from the sun.
