Sure it's for your Mom...:D Hope SHE enjoys it.

Only problem with natives is that they're not meant to be seen from the top, that's why koi are so popular. Otherwise see what you can net up, all our ponds and ditches have something available. Start small if you can and let them grow to their surroundings. Natives do prosper better with a deeper pond tho. Shiners and most panfish flash nicely when they move quickly. Comets can grow large and take quite well to our weather.

UV sterilizers do keep the green away... as long as they can keep up. A pond in direct Fla sun can be a challenge. Dwell time in the UV vs pond volume is the key.

Also go for water hyacinth , water lettuce & different aquatic plants (all free, just rinse well before putting in the pond (and be carefull, some of this stuff is not supposed to be transported from its area))

Dr. Joe is right about the plants. be really carefull with them. the fish as long as they are within the size limit will be ok with just a fishing license. don't try to keep any tilapia, they are illegal to transport alive.
 
well im probably just going to go catch fish and get plants from local ponds and stuff........thanks for your imput and ill try to remember to post some pictures when i build it
 
good luck and please do provide some photos. In fact, I need to get some photos of my friend's pond that I helped build/dig. I should get on that.

oh, watch out for oak tree roots they will kill you. Our pond ended up much smaller than originally planned because of those things.
