Now I must begin building a pond for a common snapper. I am getting him from my cousin he is about 8 inches I believe. The pond is around 150 gallons I am hoping to put a fence around it and maybe also have a large Red Ear Slider.(The snapper is currently with two painted turtles) All he eats is pellets there are even 3 large fantails in the tank that he never goes after. I was just wondering if anybody has any tips for ponds housing a snapper. Thanks

make it bigger and dont get the preformes liners, they dont have sloped sides and it may be difficult for the turtle to get in and out....well out atleast. also turtles wont run away if they are free to roam, they know where the water is. so id say make it bigger, about 2'+ deep and around 4x7 or so.

just my $0.2

I was using a wading pool for my large female florida snapper, she was about 16 inches shell size and i had a wire fence around it. The one inch by two inch fencing, similar to chicken wire. While i was watching she literally climbed up the fence and before she could go all the way over the top and grabber her and put her back into the pond.

I ended up going with a wooden surround for it with a 8 inch over hang towards the pond. No matter how hard she tried she couldnt get over the edge in that arrangement.

Also if its going to be outside...be VERY wary of raccoons, dogs, cats, some large birds and Idiot neighborhood children. They seem to take more than their share out of my ponds over the years.

Best of luck with your pond and i wouldnt hold my breath on the fish making it for ever in there but i've kept turtles with snappers as long as the snapper was reasonably small and very well fed.

I encountered some snapper in the hot tub last weekend, but wasn't able to catch any. LOL

My uncle has put turtles in his 9000gl pond numerous time, wild and store bought turtles. They always leave during the night and never come back. So I would say you need a fence.

I don't think a turtle with a rubber liner is a good idea.

45 mil. liner would be ok with a turtle. thier claws arent that sharp.

if you think you need a fence then build a fence...a turtle is like any other animal, they like to explore and they always know where the water is as long as they where put their first and not dumped in the yard somewhere.

also stock it with goldfish so it has food incase it get hungry during the night or whenever turtles feel hungry.

I didn't realize they could climb.
my favorite turtle story is when I was a kid, money was real tight. we fished in our "backpond" for orange carp, blacksilver colored carp, and blue gill. well we didn't really have alot of cash to buy hooks and sinkers. so if we got snagged and it wasn't over our heads, we'd wade out and unsnag the line. so with my cousin holding pressure on the line so i could follow it easier, in I went. when I got close to the end of the line, i'd found the sinker, the line started moving. I went scrambling for the bank, where my cousin just keeps reeling in the line. ends up I'm getting chased, Involuntarily I'm sure he'd been just as happy not being pulled on by a hook in his moth, by a 1 1/2 foot long snapping turtle. scared the snot out of me. it end well sorta, he opened his mouth and the hook came lose, but he didn't keep the worms.
