Pond Heaters????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
insulate the pond, and you'll need shockingly less heat than you think.

i keep my 1100g pond heated with only 2 250w heaters. but my pond framing is built and insulated with fiberglass insulation, in the same fashion as a house.

I used titanium heaters with a controller on my big setup. I probably have way too much, but better safe then sorry.

I just picked one of these up on ebay http://www.koienterprise.com/Pond-Heaters/ThermaKoi-Heater-p-122.html

But i found a guy locally who t's a loop off his hot water heater line, with a little giant booster pump and a temp controller. The controller tells the pump when to kick on and off. and the hot water line runs into a seperate water holding area with coiled tubing. With this setup, the hot water heater does not run any more than it would normally, because it always keeps the water hot. All your doing is making your hot water tank hold a little more water, and not wasting any water in the process. Using this method he could watch the temp climb over a matter of mins in his large system. Something to think about.
What are your thoughts?

Resurrecting this thread... Looking for some more input. Has anyone tried using this Koi pond heater? ^^^ Its a 1.5KW unit, I have one, however I just havent tried it out yet.

Haven't tried that one, I have used another similar one they sell: http://www.koienterprise.com/Pond-Heaters/Elecro-Heaters-Titanium-p-524.html

Not a big fan of it, main problem being the built in thermostat is not reliable. Would calibrate it just right, check it later and its off again by a few degrees.

I have just been using these 1000W models in my ponds, 2500G and 1500G: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=23654

I don't use the controller anymore, instead plugging the heaters into a reef keeper controller. I use multiple heaters on both ponds. You can get the heater and shield direct from the manufacture without the controller.

That has been my biggest concern with trying this heater. For a koi pond it would be no big deal, but for something more sensitive to temperature fluctuation it could be disastrous. If you dont mind me asking how much $ is the heater and shield?
