Hi everybody,

i've just got my self a pond kit. on the box it says its approx. 150 gallons. I would like to get some fish for the pond but i need to know two things. Firstly what fish can i keep in an outdoor pond in the southeast of england. It gets pretty cold here sometimes -4 celcius. Second question is if i can keep fish do i also need to get an outdoor heater?

common goldfish if its 18"+ deep, ive kept them in less an they have over winted fine but better be safe!

koi....how cold does it get there

would i also need a heater for it during the winter>?
as a rule any thing 3 ft deep wont freeze solid.. if u want u couls get a floating heater that will keep a break in the ice ... never feed koi or goldfish in cold temp

why shouldn't i feed them in cold temp\? So in the winter you never feed them? It gets about -4^ centigrade. do i need a heater?

No you don't need a heater for goldfish but you need to have something to keep a hole in the ice for gas exchange. I would recommend some kind of airator. And I wouldn't keep koi in a 150. And the reason you do not feed koi and goldfish in the winter is because the metabolisms slow down and they cannot digest the food. And actually there are little floating heaters for ponds that keep it from freezing over instead of using an airator. Many options.

thanks for the info. I'll take pics soon. As soon as it gets warmer i'm gonna start building it with my house mate.
