In the next few years, i am moving to a new house, and will hopefully have a fishroom. I just found an old table cover in my garage that was made out of acrylic and has the dimensions of 72" x 96" x 10". It is made out of 1/4 inch acrylic, i believe. I would like to use it as a "pond" for african cichlids in the fish room. I just do not know whether or not it would be safe to fill with water. It has no cross bars, etc, but it is only 10" deep? Assuming it was sealed properly (which i can fix if it is not), would you trust it in the long run?

Fill it outside and test it first. If it pushes the sides out at all be weary. I have my doubts it will. Only 10" deep doesn't give a lot of flexibility.

.25"?...no
300gallons is alot of leak...

its not 25" in any direction, what are you trying to say?

I was planning on testing it outside, i was just making sure it wasnt a lost cause, if you know what i mean;)

As for it being really shallow - oh well. My Africans only use the bottom half of their 20" tall tank anyway, and it gives them alot more room for territories. :)

One more thing though - if i decided to brace it, what would be the best way to go about it? What material?

Thanks again

I would cut some wood and put it like a belt around the tank half way up and put small struts coming down from there, screw it all into the acrilic.

thanks for clearing that up, cipolla6. I didnt see the point.

I just actually measured it (its up in my attic, so i had just guessed the size before) and it is actually 67"x85"x10" with .5 inch acrylic. I was considering adding triangular braces on the corners, made out of acrylic, and about 12"x12". Would this add any support, or is it just a waste of acrylic?

1/2" sounds sooo much better! :D

Corner bracing will help. If you don't mind the look you could install triangle braces all around the sides from the bottom to the side every 18" rather than cross braces.

When you test it outside make sure it's on an extremely level surface (if concrete then place plywood under the tank).

For the more envious of us pix would be nice :headbang2.

Keep us posted on the progress,

Dr Joe

It may be a while before i get a chance to fill it. Just getting it out of the attic will be fun. I will also probably resilicone it, simply because i do not want to risk anything. First i have to convince my parents to help me get it down.

Dr Joe: Yeah, 1/2 inch does :)

I think i will just try corner bracing for starters, as i would like to keep the "pond" feel, and still be able to view it from the side. ANd as i said, i will post pics ASAP, but it may be a while ;)

zennzzo : sorry for the confusion. Thanks for clearing that up :)
