Pond on the ground...DIY Overflows/Sump Distance ??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
JohnG, just watched your whole video. Holy ray setup! LOL! Your fish room is incredible! I'm going out in a few to get my supply list....hopefully I don't forget too much. I'm really excited now to get this started - I'll be sure to post some pics of the progress!

As I'm setting this up, I'm wondering what I should do for humidity control; I've had large tanks before, but they were always enclosed and I never had an issue with it. Do any of you cover your pond setups with anything (plexi?), or do you just run dehumidifiers/air conditioners to help with excess moisture in your rooms? I want to make sure my livingroom doesn't turn into a mold culturing heaven, especially since my daughter has a pretty bad mold allergy.

Steveo, awesome, so glad to hear that! It's on my list, and will be in my home shortly, lol! Thanks again!

I just use bio balls in mine, but the design would work with just about any media that wouldn't fall through the egg crate at the bottom.

As to humidity I don't cover the pond, your going to want to get yourself a dehumidifier or two if you plan to do the same. I have a dedicated AC unit and 2 dehumidifiers running in my garage that keep the humidity level down to around 50. You can get the 70 pint models for around $200 on amazon, just make sure it has the hose drain option as the bucket fills up in a few hours with the high humidity. If you don't have a floor drain I would also suggest one of these to drain the water into: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AHT78O/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00

Guys, I can't thank you enough for the help! I really appreciate the pictures....it's very helpful. Do you all just use bioballs? I've thought about doing lava rock - anyone using that at all?

T1Karmann, do you have photos of your concrete pond/build? I'm not very handy with concrete (lol....must be a girlie limitation;) but I'd be up for trying if it worked out so well!

Steveo and JohnG, love the setups, and thanks again for the helpful pics! Hopefully I'll have this pond setup and running now in no time! Thank goodness I've got a few extra days off work this week - I'm going to need them!

my tank is glass but up at normal tank level but the idea is still the same if you done it out of ply wood with a front panel

it has concret foundation blocks at the back with unistrut to surport the middle over the sump then just a red brick front to make it look nice then a front frame cut from MDF then sprayed in a high gloss car paint

So I got a rustic version of my pond running yesterday. Still a ton to do, and it's far from aesthetically pleasing, but it's at least running! Threw a couple of angels in there to make sure it won't be a death trap (used a plastic planter for the sump, and wanted to make sure there wasn't anything funky with it), and so far so good. Just waiting for my sand to come in this Fri, and on the hunt for some big driftwood now. Can't wait! I'll post more pics as it starts looking nicer ;) Thanks guys for all the help!! (Oh, and the sump has about 40-50lbs of lava rock, although I'd like to add one more bag).

Yep, 300 gallons. Ive got two (second one isn't running yet). I'd like to build something big within the next year, but I'm still contemplating what I want to do. So for now these will work great I think!
