Well, we've had sustained temps below 20F for the last 4 days, with nighttime lows as low as 5F. Its supposed to stay below 20F for another 4-5 days. Brrrr! :)

Anyways, my pond started freezing over the first night, and each night after it got a little more frozen. This morning when I got up it was almost completely frozen. The only places where it isn't is right in front of the skimmer, the waterfall, and where the waterfall enters the pond. The splashing from the waterfall makes some very interesting shapes as it turns into ice...

BTW, there are about 50-75 feeder comets in the pond, but that's it. I never got around to stocking it before cold weather got here :irked:. It will get stocked and planted in the spring, as well as having all the landscaping done around it.

I'll try to get some pics. of the ice near my falls. The wheather has not been above 20 for a few days and not going to reach 30 for three weeks. The ice formations are awesome. We have 6-10" of snow starting this evening so I need to get pics. before it is covered by snow.

Conner- Looks like everything is working well?

Are you still going to dig it bigger/deeper to use up the extra liner you have?

I may decide to dig it a little wider in the spring, although I'm not sure about that. We'll see. I'd like to dig out a few planting shelves on the side opposite the bog filter, where the pond slopes up to the shore. If I can dig that out a few feet in each direction and create some planting beds, then I'd be really happy.

Yah, we're supposed to get up to 4" of snow tonight into tomorrow. May or may not happen... although its not supposed to get above 28F, so if we do it should stick around for a few days.

Everything is working fine! The pond has been running for several months now without issue (after I got the whole liner-lifting-off-the-bottom issue taken care of). I buried all the edges of the liner under dirt, so now nothing can get underneath it. I also redid the overflow "creek" I had dug, so that it wasn't so low, and buried the liner in it as well. I think that's initially where the water got under the liner.

I am hoping to slightly expand the pond for some planting beds in the spring, and then plant those and the bog. I haven't decided if I'm going to put the gar and channel cat in the pond, or if I'll go with koi/goldfish. We may possibly be selling the pond in the next 1-1.5 years, so I don't want to saddle a new owner with taking care of predatory fish (plus who wants a pond with gar in it if they have a toddler, right?).

Here are some more pics from the freeze last week and this weekend. We had single digit temps every night for about 4 days, with only 10-11F temps during the day. I kept the pond running through the whole thing.

I don't heat it. The plans initially were to only have local native fish in it, but I may end up tossing some koi and ornamental goldfish in there, since I'm hoping to sell the house in a year or so. The pond is deep enough that most of it won't freeze, and as long as an opening is maintained for gas exchange, the fish should be ok.

As of now, there are only feeder comets in it, and I don't really care if they survive the winter or not.

Pond is looking good.

Forgot to post my pics.

This is when it started getting cold.

nice pics. If it had stayed in the teens and single digits (and cloudy) another day or two, mine might have frozen over so completely I'd have to turn it off. Fortunately the sun's come out and its warmed up a few degrees, so things have started thawing out.

I can't wait for spring to get here so I can do the landscaping, plant it, and get it stocked with fish!
