We got about 8-10" on snow last week. With all that snow covering the ice, it began to thaw the ice under the snow on the main part of the pond. I have basically all open water on my pond now. It was crazy to see the section of open water grow amost before my eyes.
It must be that the water is a few degrees above freezing and the heat gets trapped under the snow and causes the ice the melt. That plus a few days of sunshine I guess. A week ago it was a hockey rink and today it's a huge bird bath....
