or get some gars if they are legal in your area...any cats or birds...SMACK right into the gars teethy mouth...or a electric catfish or electric eel...lol ZAP on that pesky heron

The fence idea isn't the best. First a fence to keep the dog out. Then netting to keep herons out. Small animals start getting caught in net and dieing. Then debris starts to build up on net. Whole thing looks terrible, becomes eyesore and unenjoyable. Pond gets emptied and removed.

im not talking about a fence like Right exactly on the side of the pond but im talking about around the perimeter like around the yard...not right besides it like what most people do...;) but if he already gots the fence for his yard then forget about what i said...but if he does got the fence already he should still go with the device that sprays intruders

i would get a thing neting and toss over top when u leave just to be safe

I use Schedule 40 PVC fittings in the spring and late fall. They are heavy enough to sink to the bottom. I take them out once the plants and lillies provide enough cover. NO netting or fencing to block views or aesthics.

If you make a section of the pond deeper they may have some refuge, also places to hide like overhangs. thats what helps them in the wild.
Alternatively, kill the first heron that comes by and leave its body laying about for the others to see!

this could be a safety hazard, but herons cant go in 3ft of water or deeper. so, make a 4ft deep pond with a straight down angle?

Some of the fish NEED access to air to survive.
