can someone help me here because the person i work for has a pond and it started leaking so he got a new liner for the pond and i layed it on loft insulation and now the new one is leaking but he do get herons around the pond weather its that i dont know but now im considering of making a cement lined pond that way it wont leak so what would you do in this situation?

pull the new liner and use pond sealent to patch the holes and inspect the pond bottom for sticks and stones, line it with a layerg of roofing felt if needed or a 1" layer of sand, after putting back the liner cover the bottom with 2" of fine gravel or coarse sand. then place a canopy above the pond, light garden shade screening will work, this should keep the herons out.

Is it defiantly leaking from the liner? Has it got a filter fountain etc on it? Have to look to see if they are leaking or loosing water? My pond in the summer looses water this is just evaporation an my fathers pond had a water fall and a fountain when these were on used to always have to be topped up. When you took the old liner out did it have an underlay on it? Sorry for all the questions. Last of all when you fitted the new liner was it a cheap one or a quality one. Butyl liners are available in 30 mil and 40 mil thickness. For irregular free-form garden ponds, particularly those smaller than 2500 square feet, 30 mil Butyl is the best choice: no other pond liner is more supple and elastic, and none can be installed with so few folds. Larger projects should be lined with 40 mil Butyl for enhanced resistance to abuse since the thicker sheet offers significantly greater strength with only a little loss of flexibility.

As for Herons they will not normally land directly in the pond but will land in the garden and stalk from there, as landing on the surface of the pond will scare their prey. Another method to consider is to suspend strong fishing line about a foot to 18" (30 - 45cm) above the ground all around the pond perimeter. This should stop the heron getting at your fish. Canes and nylon fishing line might look less obtrusive than netting the pond. The fishing line needs to be about 6" to 1 foot away from the pond edges

Evaporation of 1/2" in a day is very possible with lower humidity and a breeze. Otherwise , the 30 mil+ liners are very tough; in 10 years I have not seen a hole that was not made with a knife, etc. ( emphasizing some of Stottys comments)
