I am a noob at this :(. I have a pond about 250 gallons. On top of the rocks on the bottom there is lot of black/brown stuff it's thick and I am wondering what would be a good filter to use for this? All I have running is one of those av light filter things, keeps the water clear by using a light or something. But I really need like a sponge filter or something on the bottom to clean up this mess it is bad. And it doesn't help when every year my goldfish have more babies it may be getting overcrowded as well :irked: anyways any help is appreciated.

Yup, Dr Joe helped me with my first pond filter. i used a 5g bucket filter and it works great. i clean it out every two weeks and it kept my water crystal clear until fall.

If you can try to remove the "sludge" by doing a water change. Save some of the pond water in a large bin/container(more is better) and pump out the remaining water and debris. You can repeat this process a couple of times by hosing off the rocks an pump out again. I'm sure you know to take out te fish as well and place them in the bin. Add new water and conditioner, replace the fish, and find a DIY filter here for next season. How many fish do you actually have. 250 gallons can probally hold 8-12 adult goldfish w/ proper filtration.

Is there anything external I can use. I had a bad experience last summer. I had a filter that was in the middle of the pond and I would have to get in the pond to get it out and clean it well one day I got in and a snake went over my feet :WHOA: and I really hate snakes. Ever since then I refuse to get in the pond, and that is when I got rid of that filter :irked:

You cant stop nature from mating. 250 gallons is a bit of room, But goldfish usually spew eggs in thier hundreds when breeding. Surpised you only got 15-20. Just cull the ones you dont want.

Started out with 8 goldfish now 15-20....I don't know what to do with all these babies lol how do I stop my fish from mating.

Snake huh? I could have done without that story  .

You don't :grinno: not w/o damage to the fish.

Get some mosquito fish (gambusia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bend_Gambusia they'll take care of any larvae and any eggs.
