Has anyone used pond pumps for their sumps/wet/dry. I would like to know more info in these types of pumps in terms of their performances in the long term for use in fish tanks.

I found a Maxflo pump in HD but not sure if its worth it. 4500 GPH $230 has anyone used this type/brand name for their sumps/w/d?

I've been using one from HD for a few years now with out a problem. I honestly don't even remember what the GPH or brand is...lol. I remember comparing the prices to aquarium pumps and saving like 30 bucks or so though.

Anyone else have any more input? islander671 not that yours wasn't good enough its just i need more info on these types of pumps.

the pump in my sump is from HD... its a pond pump.. white package.. i think its made by beckett or something.. it was like $70... i think it was rated for 350-400gph at 4"head.... its been running great for 4-5 months.. super quiet (it is ziptied to a piece of plastic with suction cups on the bottom)..

All of the ones that I've seen at HD or LOWES have been power hogs and over priced. You can get a better deal online unless the pump is on clearance.

The ones I've used from there run hotter than aquarium pumps, good if you need to heat the water but it's coming from being a power hog like rallysman said.

That said, I've never lost one of them.

hmm, thanks guys, but what would you consider a decent energy saver in terms of watts it uses up?

My Reeflo sequence dart is rated around 160w at 3600gph. I saw other pumps with similar flow rates double that in consumption.

Hmm, well this Mag drive i plan on using uses up 265 watts and its rated at 2400 GPH Max 0' head. So im guessing this pump in terms of power usage is really bad then but i heard other good things about it.

The pond pump I just picked up is rated at 4800 gph @ 280 watts. The one I saw at Menards was 4500 gph @ 480 watts. Even @ 280 watts my pond is somehow holding 80 degrees with a single stealth heater. I'm guessing the pump warmed the water that much.Efficiency will be much cheaper in the long run.
