Do you need to do water changes on a moderately stocked new pond? It will be about an 800 gallon pond. Im wondering what sort of GPH pump I need for my filter set up and water fall. Can all the water go through the filter and then to the waterfall, or would that be too much flow through the filter? Its a Total Pond pressure filter good for 1200 gallon ponds.

How high is the waterfall? On the box it should state what the GPH is at 0, as well as 1', 2' or 3'. The flow will decrease as you raise the outake. In addition, over time, your filter and pump will get clogged and will never give you 1200GPH other than the 1st month of use. So I would probably get a slightly higher flow pump - like 2000GPH and check what its output is at 3'.

After the pond is cycled completely, W/C's will just need to be made to remove nitrAtes that the plants don't use up (you are having plants?).

Ponds on average get turned over .5x to 2x (higher stocking levels) an hour.

Yes the whole return can go to the waterfall, it just depends on the size of the waterfall and the noise level you can tolerate :D.

Just check what the manufacturer recomends for the pump on that preticular filter. If it is only 1200 gph, stocking levels should stay fairly low. The more filtration, the more bio-load a pond can handle. Check out the DIY filters, if you are handy and want more flow, there are many options for you. Plants?

Water changes are always a good thing, but not as necessary as in a tank. They may be needed after QT or when meds. are used, but not always. There is usually much more volume and turnover that basically eleminates the need for a WC. Other than topping off from evaporation, I don't do WC's. I do one a year in early spring to remove any fall leaf debris not collected in fall.

thanks guys. The water fall is about 4-5 feet above water level. I will have a couple plants. Will the waterfall be enough for oxygenation by itself with about 6 12" long fish?

should be fine as long as the pond isnt too long and oxygen doesnt get to one side. to be safe id start off with a small aerator too

the pond will be about 5' wide and 9' long. I might use a small air pump. we have several of those.
I picked up a 1200 GPH pump today. Concerned about a pre filter set up. It just has a screen over the inlet and I think leaves might be a clogging problem if I dont stay on top of it.

any tips on laying in the liner? Im just about ready for that step. # of people needed? I figure 4-5 people

make sure all rocks have been removed then lay the underlay then the liner get as level as possible and as few creases as possible then slowly fill pulling out creases but do not put to much strain on the liner or it may rip . good luck
