Dear all,

Before I put the situation for your discussions and experiences, here are some details of my pond mentioned in my previous posts:

2400 gal, 17X8 ft, depth between 1,5 – 3,5 ft. Epdm liner. Zone 9, no shade, about 24 kois largest abt 7-8 inches,2 cambarus, water lilies, 3 japanese umbrella, 2 water cannas, countless amount of egeria densa and etc etc. Stocked since april 2008.

Well, since I started it up, I have a very simple DIY filter, simple aeration pump used for the aquariums and bought a little later 40 Watt UV. Used no chemicals at all.

The first few months I put the system on for only some hours/week and the UV not more than let's say 10 hours in total. I had some times soupy water not possible to see any below the water surface but other times also clear water. Had one time algae boom. Did no water change, only added some when necessary because of evaporation.

As having read all the proposals and experiences (hundreds of them, as you know) written on how to keep the water clear, on the net, to leave the pond water into the “arms of the mother nature” with the help of the plants, attracted my interest more than the others.

Since beginning of august, I have never turned on the water circulation pump and filter, did not use the UV, and no aeration pump but allways kept my eyes on the fish behaviors and also permanently making the nitrate and ammonia tests (all results were perfect).
Since then it has been nearly 6 months and I have a permanent clear water, which I did not have such before. I can see all the tiny details of the bottom that amazes me.

Bottom of the pond was plain liner, no sand or pebbles etc. now is covered with a black residue, which freightened me at the beginning but seeing the kois happily enjoying in this stuff cooled me down.
Last 2 months, it rained allmost every day and the pond is discharging extra water. PH test I did not make any.

Actually I am mostly anxious about the lack of aeration but the koi looks happy.

Now what I want to hear from you friends, are your ideas and comments on this positive result of the 6 months without any finger touch of mine; if all the natures miracle is going to be stable like this or if some danger or catastrophe will be waiting for me in the coming period?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds interesting. When I do my pond in the spring I doubt I will try that approach, but think is great it is working out for you.

I think it works for now with the small fish, but once the Koi start to grow water parameters will begin to change exponentially.

Realistically the science is against two dozen Koi growing and thriving through adulthood.

:iagree:with mrunlucky07, as of now you have a somewhat ecological balance in the pond. With all the rain Mother Nature has been doing the water changes for you and aerating the water too. :headbang2

The stuff on the bottom is detritus and should be cleaned out, if it gets to thick it's possible to get anaerobic bacterial growth (Mother Nature cleans ponds out with flooding).

Keep tabs on the chemistry and if you notice any change in the ammonia start doing water changes and find a new home for the larger fish or start up the filtration and give Mother Nature a vacation.

Thank you for all your comments.

mdb_talon: Although august and september (hot months) was included in this period, I wonder what will be the situation as the spring and summer comes back again. We will see.

peef2: No water change, only added more water due to summer evoporation and ofcourse the rains.

mrunlucky07 and Dr.Joe: Yes I also believe that as the koi grows up, the balance will be disturbed and then need to make some touches. I respect science and chemistry as well as the nature) and the water tests must go on.

Also want to mention one more point. Here in MFK and in many other forums, I allways read how the people suffer from “string algae” “hair algae” etc blocking the pumps/filters and how they are collected by tons or meters lenght.

Well here ( keeping the natural ponds apart) I have never heard in any local pond forum or among my pond owner friends, about the occurance of such heavy algaes. We only have them free in water as microscobic bodies or attached on the side walls of the pond.
This is strange to me. Can it be because of the regional natural conditions?

Such as many plants mentioned in ”invasive plants list” of that part of the world are not at all invaise here and I feel funny when I read that the guys over there are trying to get rid of ….. plant as we are here trying to have just some of it surviving.

I agree w/the Doctor. That "black stuff" is a bio-bomb. The results you have are from what Joe had said being a temp. balance. The pond can handle that particular amount bio-load for now. The slug needs areation to feed the BB that will help break it down. I'm courious to hear how the spring start-up goes. Again, keep an eye on the parms. and keep us posted.

Count it as a blessing.

If your desperate we can send you some string algae .

Curious, what do you keep the pH at in the pond?

Thanks Dr.Joe, for your generousity:)

Regarding PH, frankly speaking, do nothing. We are told by the municipality that the tap water has a 6,5 level, if I remember correct. I know that the rains disturb it but I don't have tests for that also. Just leave it like that.

I am anxious also abt that black stuff. Now it is quite cold for us to do that, will wait till may as I make the preperations of the liliy pots for the new season.

Yes also spring start up is important, have to keep two eyes on it. Thanks
