Hi guys,

I've just bought about 40 kg of pool filter sand - just want to make sure i got the right stuff..

My main concern though is at the back of the bag it states the following:

CONTENTS Specialised sand 100%.
Note: Ingredients may contain respirable Crystalline Silica.
Specialised Sand will usually containt <1% respirable Crystalline Silica.

RISK Specialised Sand may cause respiratory, skin and eye irritation.
- Repeated inhalation of dust containing crystalline silica may cause bronchitis silicosi (scarring of the lungs).

Is this normal to be on pool filter sand bags? Or have I purchased the wrong stuff? I just wanted to confirm before I begin using it.

I've done searches on 'Crystalline Silica' on this forum and most of it said it's ok to use but they were rather old threads, thanks in advance for your feedback!

A little more than you asked, but here is what I did to clean the sand. This is the same stuff I put in my pool filter and I'm still alive.:D You can post picture of bag but I think you will be ok.

I just setup a tank today with pool sand ('Crystalline Silica'). I took off my filters, drained tank, put sand in the tank, filled with water while stiring it, netted out the stuff flotting, drained it, refilled it waited 30 min. then put my filters back on (2 ac110's) filtered for 2 hours with some type of cycle. Put fish (Flowerhorn) in and all seems to be good. FH has been in for 14 hours and looks good. Time will tell. Hope this helps.

TRENT you are the man!

i've been waiting for re-assurance on this, i guess the warning disclaimer on the bags did scare me off a little. As no threads on MFK suggested that pool filter sand contained 'Crystalline Silica' in it.

i really appreciate your feedback, as i feared that no one was going to reply to this thread, i will proceed to use the pool filter sand i've purchased!

Her is a picture of mine about 30 hours later. Fish seems fine. Now I have to change that background. yuch!

Yeah, it is silica sand, so try to avoid breathing the dust, but once it's underwater it's harmless

Pool filter sand as substrate? any extra benefits.

any special spot i can pick this up at or is it only on line?

any particular brand?

been thinking about sand as substrate but can't seem to decide on one.
