Pool filter sand consists of?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought mine at a place that makes stone (same sand I use in my 17,000gal pool). You can also get it from a pool supply store but they charge about 3 times as much. Just make sure it says silica sand and is pretty coarse. The company on the bag was Unimin Corp. out of Idaho.

You should be able to get it at any Swimming Pool/Spa supply store. I get it at an "abrassives supply"(they supply large amounts to drinking water treatment plants).

any special spot i can pick this up at or is it only on line?

any particular brand?

been thinking about sand as substrate but can't seem to decide on one.

Pool/Spa stores are a safe bet as to where to get it. Other places might carry it to, but mine came from a pool store. I wouldn't think different brands would be that different. As far as benefits, if you want a light colored sand substrate, it's much easier to clean and maintain than play sand. It's also much cleaner when you add it to the tank. When I used play sand, I rinsed it for over an hour and it still took 2 days for the tank it clear up. With PF sand, I didn't even rinse it (rinsed a little bit and the water ran through it crystal clear instantly) and the tank cleared in about an hour.

yeah pool supply shops are you're best bet, but from what i've read you guys in the states can also pick it up from hardware stores.

thanks for the pictures TRENT - i'm going to start cleaning my sand tonight, your images look great btw!

I hope this thread clarifies the pool filter sand as substrate question for everyone.
Benefits:
1. Cheap price.
2. Coarser than other sands making it easier to clean.
3. Less likely to get sucked up by canister filters/gravel vac's.
4. Once again - CHEAP price!

Also that it is safe to use as substrate and it does have funky warning labels that shouldn't really affect you using it as an aquarium substrate.

You got it!

pool filter sand is great and it is only known to cause health problems in california

That tank looks pretty cool. How much sand did you put in it? Just looks like quite a bit.
