Hi,

Nearly 6 weeks ago I added pool filter sand to my tank because I thought it would be better for the fish.

Worst mistake of my life....for the whole length of the time the this crap has been in my tank the water is cloudy, then after a day it subsided, as soon as a fish stir it up you can actually see clouds of stuff coming of the sand making the water cloudy.

let this post be a warning to all bare bottom fish keepers....KEEP IT BARE....

Don't listen to the crap about substrate OR pool filter sand being good...it's not...it's all a freeking waste of money and does nothing other than cloud up the water.

Thats funny because I have used pool filter sand and never had an issue. Many other MFKers use pool filter sand and do not have any issues. Did you stop and think maybe it was the specific brand of pool filter sand you were using?

There are other types of sand which is a lot more heavier and doesn't cloud the water...
Actually the thing is, you must first test the sand if it's cloudy or not...

Yeah I had it for a while. You must not have cleaned it very well because I never had any problems like this. My only issue was the silicates adding to my brown algae problem.

Never had an issue with pool filter sand used it for years. Of course, we should probably go with the opinion of one person versus hundreds of people that have never had an issue.

I've also used it for years as it's great for rays. Did you rinse it first?

It will clear up eventually. If you didn't wash it thoroughly enough it will take longer.

To clean it,I put it in a bucket, pushed a hose to the bottom and started the water running,I swished the hose around until the water ran clear, then added to the tank.

Once the sand had been Sat for a few days, as soon as it is disturbed it releases this fine white crap into the water

Can you expand on this? What sand is heavier? Also how do you test the sand to see if it is cloudy?
