Any Pool Filter Sand will be safe…

Rinse it well before putting it in the tank… “silica dust’ will not be a problem since you rinsed it before putting it in the tank…

Pool Filter Sand is regulated to be no larger than X and no smaller than Y… yet naturally due to grinding there will be some dust that needs to be rinsed prior to use… Different brands may use different regulations, but all will be fairly uniformed in size…

As for silica or non silica… it doesn’t matter…

Please educated yourself on what silica is before misleading anyone on this…

The chemical compound silicon dioxide, also known as silica, is an oxide of silicon with a chemical formula of SiO2 and has been known for its hardness since antiquity. Silica is most commonly found in nature as sand or quartz, as well as in the cell walls of diatoms. It is a principal component of most types of glass and substances such as concrete.

So unless you believe that sand, glass, silicon, quartz, etc are bad for your fish… silica is fine…

Hi, i'm currently setting up a 400l (100 UK gal) tank and i'm washing 50KG of sand by putting 25KG in a drum and running water into it and churning it with my hands, I have been doing this for over an hour and the water is still slightly brown. Am I washing too much sand at one time and creating more dust by grinding the sand? How clear should the water be to know it's ok?

What kind of sand? Cut it down again to 12kg and try that. Depending on what type of sand it could be just real dirty. It took only about 5min of rinseing to get my PFS clean. Water was clear when rinsed through the sand.

It's aquarium Silica sand, the first bucket seems to be a lot clearer now so I might let the filter do the rest of the work with that one and do the next 25KG bag in two goes, it's a good job i'm not on a water meter!!
