is ALL swimming pool filter sand ray safe

I kept my motoros on there for about 6 months without issue. And have seen others keep them
on there for longer.... But that doesn't guarantee any long term effects. Never seen any signs
externally of damage such as abrasions or redness do to the sand. I mainly removed it cause
it:
1) always looked dirty no matter how much I vacuumed it (being that it is snow white)
2) it was easily disturbed and was sucked into filtering system.

the gravel i have and love is no long available so sand is my next option

what i need is a slight larger sand than silica which i hate the way it sticks to the rays and makes black rays look crap

when i asked is all pool sand ray safe what i meant was is it all the same stuff or are some types different to others

Not sure about the different types of pool sand available. Really only one type ( Manufactured) available around me. Not sure what is available in UK.
I know I use a natural river gravel which is appx 3mm in diameter and the rays love it and so do I.

I set up a ray tank using Leslie's pool filter sand a couple years ago. After a month of cycling, the tank started to leak and the leak was not repairable. I sold the tank to someone for their snake, and I emptied all the sand into my flower bed. After a year, the sand was so sharp, that if I used my hand to dig in the flower bed there, it would scratch my hand all up. Now I am planning to start another ray tank, and there is no way I am using pool filter sand. I know some people do and it has worked out, I am just telling my personal experience that the pool sand wears down and becomes sharp with time.

I don't know if you can get it in UK, but you should try msging Lincolngoh. He has some type of spherical round "gravel/sand" pellet thing that looks really sick with his black rays.

I have used PFS with no problems for over a year. After awhile it no longer looked the part and I opted for some more expensive sand from my LFS.

During WC, I would use my hand and stir the sand. It never felt rough and my rays did not have aproblem withit.

not 100% but i would think it is all the same quarts (silica sand) the difference is grade size. i can't remember what grade size i use but my rays have been on it for two years or so. the only thing i don't like it gets in my filters.

After not liking the gravel you showed me at wildwoods I choose to go back to sand. Unipac's silica sand is course and inert but very dark in colour which I didnt like. Think this is what Justin uses Richard?
Then unipac do a silver sand but this way too fine.
They do a whole range of other sands and gravel inc sands called congo, zambezi etc. There nice but after talking to unipac tech department there not all inert and some very sharp.

BD aquarium sand is nice, still bit too fine though. Alan uses this.

I ended up getting pool filter which is lovely and light and no problems with rays.

All pool filter sand should be silica so therefore inert which is very important.

Hope this helps
