pool filter sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
good, it is inert so you will need to fertilize the water column and use some root tabs. You can alway put down some organic potting soil and cap it with sand. When I do another tank that is what I will do.

whats the difference between flourite sand and pool sand... are there any better plant substrates then flourite (iv just heard its top of the line)

The Fluorite comes in black (and brown if I remember right) so that is a huge plus IMO. You basically get some extra iron with a substrate made for plants, but it is eventually exhausted.

If you go with an inert sand I wouldn't do PFS. It usually only comes in one color and some people have had issues with it causing brown algae (although this is rare). I prefer Estes' Ultra Reef (also intert, silica based but does have a coating to prevent brown algae problems). It comes in black and white. I usually either do solid black or black and white mixed.

Even with sands made for plants I would use root tabs and general liquid supplements.
