Just curious. Can you use poolfilter sand in your aquarium? Anything special I would need to do to it before putting it in the tank? Stay clean fairly well? Like I said, just curious, because it is much cheaper than anything from my LFS.

love it ,i use no other type of sand anymore.
just rinse well and use.

The only thing I dont like about PFS, (which I do use in some of my tanks 3-4?) is that you cant use a gravel vac on it, so that crap in the bottom can get stuck in there and creat nitrate issues for a long time.

Do big h2o changes, have good filtration, and stir up your sand bed to get everything out and you should be okay.

Stays pretty clean, cheap and the stuff I get is pretty clean right out of the bag.
The lightness of it does seem to lighten the color of some fish. Here is one of my ebjd over pfs. All my others are over black sand and they are much darker blue.

You can absolutely use a gravel vac to clean pfs. Just hover over the sand with the end and it will pick everything right up. You can stir the sand up with the vac even and it won't suck it all the way into the hose.

I gravel vac mine too. Leaves a small pile in my sink. Scoop it ip with a plastic cup and back into the tank it goes. Plus I over bought my sand by about 100 lbs so I have lots to spare.

I use pfs in both my tanks..just make sure you clean it very well before you put it in your tank..I also use a vac to clean it..then again I do about 50% wc every week

Hovering over it isnt "vac"ing it. I mean getting into the substrate and removing everything that is packed in there.

^^^ Ive never had anything get below the surface. I also keep lots of loricariids so that could be part of the reason why. I also use an eheim gravel vac to spot clean every few days so my substrate tends to stay clean in general
