Sorry I mean you can vac it but not as vigorously as larger pepple substrate. What I do is push down vac into sand then lift it above sand and higher to let the grains of sand back out while still getting whatever was buried under the surface. If that makes any sense.

I actually gravel vac mine,i just stick it in the sand and the brand i use seems to be heavy enough that it doesnt go all the way up the tube,it goes about half way and falls back down.
