Pool filter sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 Pacu and a pleco for stocking.

the smaller Pacu and the pleco are already in the tank and so far so good.

With my 75, it wouldn't be that much of a problem. My Jaguar/Freddy mix won't leave the intake tubes on anyway! I run 2 emporer 400's on it. I put the tubes back, he bites me, and an hour later the tubes are off again. I finally gave up. He uses the intake tubes as "toys". I was thinking about switching to sand, but didn't know that it could mess up the filter.

I have been running my fluval 305 in there for about 3 weeks now and all seems good. The pool filter sand does not get kicked up much at all when I do water changes.

The most contaminated water in aquariums is at the surface. Sure there are feces and debris on the bottom, but the air water interface is where most dissolved and semi dissolved organics accumulate. This is why I prefer overflow/surface skimming, and simply vacuum the other stuff. If your filter picks up the debris from the bottom, (unless you clean the filter daily) it isn't gone, it's still in the water column as the water in the filter passes over it, just a bit out of sight.
The impurities at the air water interface are the things picked up and removed with fractionation.

+1 just vac everytime you do a water change and save yourself the headache.
