Yesterday, I was cleaning out the garage and came across a old pool pump for a above ground pool that we bought for my kids. Never was used or anything I was wounding if you could use this type of pump in a fish tank its 200gal.

You could use it, but what is it's flow rate in gallons per hour. How noisy is it? Is it designed for constant use? Wattage?

is it straight drive or magnetic drive... that's the main difference...

A straight drive pump has a sharft attached to the motor that is also attached to the impellor. If debris gets into the impellor and stops it from turning it will burn up the motor...

With a magnetic drive pump... the motor turns a magnet... which turns the impellor via another magnet... this way if debris, or any other resistance, slows the impellor it simply skips a revolution and allows the motor to continue turning at it's natural rate... thus removing the concern of burning out the motor...

if it's a straight drive pump... then ensure you avoid restriction and you're safe... but if you have restriction in your system (which is typical when pushing water through lengths of tubes) then you are in trouble...
