Does anyone use pool filtration sand filters in larger setups. I see smaller systems in the $200 range? Is the flow too great or ? Some are as low as 1200 gph.

Just seems like a good option if you could get one quiet enough or able to remotely locate it. Just thinking of a bigger tank build in future. Also could fine carbon not be added to the sand filtering portion?

I researched it. It apparently clogs way to fast. It will drain over half the system during backflushing.

You wouldn't want to use the pool pump, yes they are power hogs. You would need a pond pump. The only way you could modify it that I know of is to use the media for a Aquadyne or similar.

I like pressure filters (pool/sand filters) and run a number of them on my tanks. I would strongly advise against using sand in them though unless you plan to backwash them daily. If not constantly backwashed sand can pack together and cake up like cement. There are other types of media that can be used such as glass, plastic beads, and other assorted plastic media.

The filter housing is cheap but the media to fill it with can be the expensive part.

Well ive been researching pool filtration as my girlfriend has a pool and I've had to learn a bit to help her maintain it. The new and smaller pumps use less electricity. But as for back flushing. Could you not use an alternative water source via a valve to keep from using tank water. Just thoughts.
