Does or has anyone used a pressurized pool sand filter on a ray tank or pond? Besides good mechanical filtration, do they offer any biological filtration? I was looking at some on ebay and you can get a big one with a pump for pretty cheap.
Better, in the long run, to go with an aquarium sand filter or bead filter. Pool equipment is usually not made to run quietly or economically. Neither are they made to run constantly (especially at aquarium temps). Hence the reason they're cheaper.
I was wondering this also. I was looking into the pumps and I would be switching them out to something else that ran on less power. I'm going to give one a try on my new tank that I'm building (2200 gal) for the mechanical side. I'm going to be running a reeflo hammerhead through one and I may need to use a different pump for backwashing. I looked at the bead filters and was going to go that way but fom what I've read is thier kinda a good mix of bio and mechanical but not great at either. The pool filters are good mechanical and I heard confilicting stories about thier bio ability. If you use zeolite with them they say it will filter down to 3 microns but I talked to a guy out here that sets up these sand filters for all types of things besides pools and 12 microns is more accurate. Mine wil be in another room because like oddball said they are noisy. Most of the sand filters are built quite cheap except I found one that is built nice and solid and that's the sta-rite.
If you want to step to that scale, there are similar set ups made for fish applications.
You need to buy the right stuff. A good 3/4hp or 1 1/2ph pump can run quieter than your run of the mill pool application junk.
I swear by the stuff from Aquatic Eco for the most part when it comes to buying large scale stuff. If you have something in mind, I can help you pick out a quality product.
Large sand or bead filters provide great mechanical and biological filtration. Just be ready for methods to clean them. It takes a good chunk of your tank water to backwash them correctly.
This is a filter room set up for a pair of Amazon pools I ran:
Wow very nice clean setup. How big are the amazon setups? I've allreay picked up the equipment I'm going to try. I never even thought about asking you thinking you deal on an even larger scale. If what I'm planning on doesn't work I'll pm you for some better equipment. Thanks
thats what im going to use with my 250 gal soon . i have the sand filter & im using a pump that has 610 gph. i hope that will work. help me if im wrong.
I will be somewhere around 500 gallons. I want a large canister type filter. I am thinking of the danner pondmaster 4000 gph canister with the 40w UV built in or a Aqua brand all oversized for the application. I am wanting to do a closed loop system this time around.
