Wouldn't buying him simply make more room for the same thing to happen again?
I remember someone on this website once said something very wise. They said that sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice the few to save the many. If you buy him they'll just get another one and put him in the same conditions. But if no one buys him, hopefully they'll be discouraged from buying more.
Although I totally understand how you feel. If you feel that bad about it, then buy him. But saving one will only make it possible for another one to undergo the exact same thing.
