I went to petsmart today, and i saw some serious neglect of the oscars there. They had open sores the size of quarters, cuts, and all that. It was pretty gross. Are all these fish going to die?

lmao i'm surprised peta hasn't said somthing. Not that i'm a fan of peta....

lol yah. Petsmart takes really bad care of there fish. The one's down here, there fish look like crap and always die a few days after you buy them.

Some of the best fish I own came from my Local PetSmart. Guess it goes to show you that it really all depends on the store itself. This one is pretty new, about a year old. I have gotten three goldfish, 5 white clouds, and oscar, two firemouths and a Texas cichlid and the only one that has died was the Texas and a white cloud. I think the Texas was killed by my convict though. Anyway...really nice healthy fish, best LFS around here.

I used to work for PetSmart. It depends on the quality of the PetCare manager and the people they hire as a staff.

I wouldn't blame it on PetSmart. I would blame it on Oscars aggresiveness.

What IS Petsmarts fault is they only allow you to order fish in increments of 12 (most of the time), which means you will stuff 12 tiger oscars in one cubicle. PetSmart also only allows a 29g hospital tank, which was probably full.

When I worked for PetSmart, our Oscars would constantly chew on each other, and beat the crap out of each other in that tiny cubicle. No matter what I did to resolve the problem, it was an on-going battle. I could only hospitalize so many Oscars in a 29g tank. Blame the natural aggression of the fish, more than PetSmart. Although they could of 'given up' at the point in which you saw these oscars, There is not much they can do to prevent such things from happening.

The same thing would happen with ANY other South American Cichlids, especially Texans.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I had to comment..

I say its 100% petsmarts fault.. If you can only order in increments of 12 then don't order any at all or dedicate three tanks just to oscars if you have to.. The one here has like 8-10... 6-7" ones together in those tiny ass cubicles at all times. It pisses me off
